Al Bawsala, translating to ‘The Compass’ in Arabic, is a revolutionary electronic device for visually impaired Muslims, aiding prayer direction. Inspired by family needs, this sleek battery-powered device incorporates a microcontroller, magnetometers, and a city selection dial. Users align with the Qibla through auditory and haptic feedback, fostering self-reliance. Created in collaboration with Rumail Memon and Ahmad Nasralla, Al Bawsala addresses a crucial need in the visually impaired Muslim community, gaining enthusiastic support for its recognition and assistance. We received a grant from the Pratt Graduate Student Engagement Fund to further develop the project.
